Succumbing to nature: A Short Story
Succumbing to nature (Part One)
A sunny Tuesday greeted the town of Ruthville after two long, gloomy decades. The universal vitamin D source had rejuvenated residents with its reappearance on the blue roof over their heads. There were no clouds in sight trying to hide Sol’s glory. The happy miracle was all over the news. It was a joyous headline to all except one individual, Icarus, who was less than thrilled about this sudden turn of events, to put it mildly.
He had specifically chosen this town to reside in to survive whilst keeping his identity hidden. Life as a vampire wasn’t easy; the sighting of the galaxy’s most important star in Ruthville skies again meant death.
Changing his day job to a night shift would also be seen as peculiar by his coworkers, Icarus pondered.
The weather’s now modifiable at will, the head scientist behind this recent development announced his team’s latest achievement in the evening press conference.
Icarus had chosen to spare human life and resorted to animals roaming the nearby forest for nutrition. Icarus had rebelled against his family and fought for human beings’ right to be safe from his clan and be allowed to enter the scientific research community but as he can see it now in hindsight, his ancestors had been correct regarding his immaturity and lack of foresight. Icarus knew his next move.
The following morning, the head scientist was found dead, with teeth marks on his neck that didn’t resemble that of any beast living in the nearby forest.
